What a Posted Hour Actually Means
Posted hours are the commonest arrangement in this paper and the one most often wrong on the internet. The board on the gate is right and everything else is a copy of it.
Why the internet is wrong about gates
Not carelessness. Structure.
A place with posted hours changes them for the season, for a staffing gap, for a wet week, for a funeral, for a burst pipe. The board is repainted or a card is taped over it, and that takes four minutes.
Updating a website takes somebody who has the login, and at a small institution that is one person who is not there today. Updating the four listing sites that scraped the website in 2023 is not a job anybody has.
So the error is one directional and predictable: published hours are the hours this place used to keep. Treat them as history rather than as information.
The three clocks
Almost every posted place runs at least three, and confusing them is the ordinary way to be disappointed.

The gate clock is the one everybody reads and the desk clock is the one that decides whether the visit works.
The last twenty minutes
Closing is a process, not a moment.
Somebody starts at the far end and walks in, and the further you are from the entrance the earlier your personal closing time is. On a large site the far corner effectively shuts half an hour before the gate.
Nobody explains this and nobody needs to: watch for the person with the keys and walk in the same direction they are walking.
Dusk, and other conditions
Some gates close at a time and some close at a condition. Dusk is the common one and it is a judgment made by a person looking at the sky.
A condition is always earlier than you calculate, because the person closing wants to be home, and it moves twenty minutes either way with cloud. Half an hour of margin is the honest allowance.
The one thing worth doing
Telephone.
Not the number on a listing site, and not an email. The number painted on the board, called during working hours, answered by somebody standing near the gate you are asking about.
Thirty seconds, and it is the difference between a morning and a locked gate. We do it before every piece in this paper and we would do it before any visit that a day is being built around.
